FAQ

Cloud Hosting 101

What is Cloud Hosting?

There are many definitions of the “Cloud”. In our case it means highly available, scalable, virtualized servers that you reach over the internet. You control each virtual server through a user-friendly control panel.

What can I do with my Cloud Server?

You can run any service you like from your Cloud Server: web hosting, application hosting, software-as-a-service hosting, or even an Asterisk voicemail IP system. You get root access, so you are in complete control, as long as you stay within our terms of service on the Legal page.

How much can I host from my Cloud Server?

There is no limit on how many services, domains or applications you can run from a CACloud server. You do need to give the server enough resources for the services you plan to run.

How much technical knowledge do I need?

A Cloud Server can be set up online within minutes. You get a user-friendly control panel and pre-installed software, so you need very little experience to get started. Remember that Cloud VMs are not managed by default. Each user maintains their own server.

What if I break my Cloud Server?

If you break your system, you can get it back two ways: restore a recent backup, or delete the server and create a new VM with a clean installation. Both options are in your control panel.

What is the difference between Self-Managed and Managed?

All CACloud services are self-managed. You control them directly through the user control panel. If you run a more complex setup, or want some help, you can add Managed Support to your account for a monthly fee; the current price is on the Managed Support page. We then update your server, patch your applications and harden the server when needed. You also get 24/7/365 access to our support team.

Can I register domains through CACloud?

Yes. Register for an account in the customer panel and buy domains through your control panel. The cost depends on the type of domain.

What is Shared Hosting?

Shared Hosting is our most popular way to get started online. It is a quick, low-cost way to set up a website. It gets its name because several customers share one server, which keeps the cost down. Each website gets its own space on that server. In most cases sites stay in their own space and do not disturb the others. You pay only a fraction of what hosting a site on your own server would cost, because you share the space.

What is a Private Cloud?

Private Clouds are for organizations that want maximum control of their data plus the benefits of the cloud. A CACloud private cloud is dedicated hardware running Proxmox VE, with Ceph storage written across the nodes so your data lives on more than one machine. There are three sizes: one node for development and staging, three nodes as the production minimum, and five when three is not enough. All three are priced and orderable, and you choose the billing term in the cart. One node is a server rather than a cluster, so it carries no availability commitment. Past five nodes, our engineers scope and quote it.

Can I run Windows or Linux on my Cloud Server?

Yes. You can pick from preconfigured Windows and Linux templates, including Red Hat, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu, right from the control panel. You can also one-click install leading applications such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla.

Can I use a control panel with my Cloud Server?

Yes. CACloud offers control panels for Linux and Windows servers. You can add cPanel or Plesk to your server during sign-up. If you want a preconfigured package, we also offer cPanel and Plesk Shared Cloud Hosting on our own cloud platform.

Can I upgrade an existing Cloud Server?

Yes, it is easy. Log in to your control panel, buy the extra resources, and assign them to your machine. The system shuts the machine down, upgrades it, and brings it back up on its own.

FAQ

Services

Can I add a firewall to my server?

Absolutely. To set up a software firewall on your server: log in to your control panel, select “Manage”, pick the cloud server, then open the “Network” tab and configure the firewall settings there. You can also email support@cacloud.com for paid configuration help. If your server is self-managed, keep your applications and operating system patched to stay secure.

FAQ

Server Management

Can I restrict IP access?

Yes. Log in to your account and select “Allowed IP Access” in the Quick Links section on the right side.

How do I see my server status?

You get real-time status on your server in the control panel. Select “Server Status” in the “Quick Links” section on the right side.

What is the speed of my CPU?

Each vCPU is the equivalent of one physical core or 2.67GHz.

What if I want to change my operating system?

At any time you can create a new Cloud Server from any of our templates, either by rebuilding your server or by adding a new one built for your new needs. Log in to your control panel, select “Manage”, click “Rebuild”, then pick your OS and distribution to start the rebuild.

How many IPs do I get?

Every system comes with at least 1 dedicated IP address, as shown in each hosting plan. If you need more, buy them directly from the control panel or email sales@cacloud.com.

FAQ

Backups

Are backups included with my Cloud Server?

Backup solutions can be purchased as an additional service.

How do you back up data?

Once backups are enabled on your system they run automatically every day, so you can always roll your cloud server back if something goes wrong. Log in to your control panel, select “Manage”, click the “Storage” tab, then enable auto-backup or change your existing backup settings.

FAQ

Infrastructure

What internet bandwidth is included with my server?

Each server has a direct connection to the network backbone and uses premium Tier 1 bandwidth. We do not throttle or limit your traffic in any way.

How do you allocate resources?

Each Cloud Server gets its own allocation of CPU cores, RAM, SSD storage and monthly bandwidth. You can upgrade every one of these through your control panel, and the new resources are live after a reboot.

FAQ

Support

Do you offer Managed Services?

Yes. CACloud offers an optional Managed Support plan for a monthly fee; the current price is on the Managed Support page. Our team performs OS updates, vulnerability patching and server hardening for you. You also get our Managed Support team's help with setting up and managing your server.

How long will a server upgrade take?

It depends on how much data is on your server. Typically an upgrade finishes within one to two minutes. A downgrade can take up to one hour.

FAQ

Billing

How do you bill?

Prices on the site are the monthly rate, billed to a credit card, and you can cancel at any time. Shared hosting and cloud servers can also be bought on a one, two or three year term, which costs less per month. You pick the term in the cart before you pay. Private Clouds are quoted. Every invoice is available in your control panel.

Do you charge for bandwidth?

Each server comes with a set bandwidth allocation. If you go over it there may be an extra charge. Check your Cloud Server pricing in your control panel for the details.

FAQ

About CACloud

Is CACloud a Canadian company?

Yes. CACloud is a Canadian-owned and operated business. Every web hosting and cloud server plan runs in one of our Canadian data centres, and we follow Canadian privacy and security regulations.

Is your support 24/7?

Yes. Our support team is available 24/7 at support@cacloud.com. Cloud Servers are self-managed, so check what your plan covers. The standard response time for the support team is 24 hours. If you need a true 24/7/365 response time, sign up for Managed Support.

Where are your data centres?

Our data centres are in Vancouver and Toronto. The Data Centers page describes each location.

Are you SOC 2 certified?

Almost — with one correction. Nobody is “certified” against SOC 2: the framework produces an independent auditor's report, not a certificate. The group holds a SOC 2 Type II report, which means an auditor tested that the controls actually operated over a review period. Earlier reports were issued under attestation standards that have since been retired and replaced by SOC 2. The report helps our clients meet their corporate governance requirements, and we can provide it on request.

How secure is my data?

Your data is written to several disks on several servers, so no single disk or server holds the only copy. If you enable backups, they are stored separately from the primary data store. All servers and storage are in Canada and follow Canadian privacy and security requirements.
